The ‘Essential’ Barrymore and Osborne

the essentials In March, Drew Barrymore will join Osborne as an “Essentials” co-host, a choice that may seem surprising to some viewers, but Tabesh says, “She’s exactly the kind of person we want. She’s got a lineage and connection to classic Hollywood and the knowledge and the passion.

“Drew came to our film festival last year in LA to co-host a movie that [her great-uncle] Lionel Barrymore was in,” Tabesh says. “She was fantastic, knew her stuff so well. Not only her family’s films but classic movies as well. She and Robert had a great conversation. And she said she would love to co-host The Essentials”.

Barrymore and Osborne will cover a wide range of films, both classic and contemporary. “Dinner at Eight” from 1933 features her grandfather, John, and great uncle, Lionel. Romance figures prominently in “Alice Adams” (1935), starring Katharine Hepburn and Fred MacMurray, “Wuthering Heights” the original 1939 adaptation of the Emily Brontë novel starring Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon, and “To Have and Have Not” (1944), which features the first-time pairing of Bogie and Bacall. They’ll also get around to Carol Reed’s mystery “The Third Man” (1949), and Charles Vidor’s film noir “Gilda” (1946) with sex bomb Rita Hayworth.

It will be interesting to hear what Barrymore has to say about Martin Scorsese’s rare feminist drama, “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” which was made in 1974, the year before she was born and won Ellen Burstyn a Best Actress Oscar in a role turned down by Shirley MacLaine. A more humdrum choice is “Kramer vs. Kramer” (1979), the somewhat dated Robert Benton divorce drama that won Oscars for Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep. The odd couple will even dissect Rob Reiner’s hilarious Rob Reiner glam-rock mockumentary “This is Spinal Tap” (1984).

Kopelman proposed with a colorless radiant-cut diamond ring by Graff.

“They are very happy together,” adds the source.

Barrymore spent about 10 days over the Christmas holiday in Sun Valley with Kopelman, where they were spotted at the romantic Vintage restaurant and picking up organic salads at Kiki’s Café. Onlookers tell PEOPLE when spotted out and about, the couple graciously posed for pictures.

Though the two never officially confirmed their relationship, they have been linked romantically since February of last year.

For most of 2011, they were nearly inseparable, spotted everywhere from Broadway shows to sporting events together.

It will be the third time down the aisle for Barrymore, 36, who was married to Tom Green from 1999 to 2001 and to Jeremy Thomas briefly in 1994.

Barrymore’s rep didn’t immediately respond to request for comment.

Less than one day after earning a top-3 spot on our annual Hit List, TB has exclusively learned that actor, producer, director Drew Barrymore has signed on to direct the coming-of-age drama WHEN THE STREETLIGHTS GO ON. The film, which is set to be produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer via their Imagine Entertainment company hit the market back in July of this year, and has quietly gained a lot of fanfare amongst execs around town. Now, a few months later, and after making the top 3 (out of 83) count of our best spec scripts of the year list, the project begins its journey from beloved script, to fast-tracked film. The story, which recounts a man’s coming-of-age events amidst a small town murder mystery is written by co-writers Eddie O’Keefe and Chris Hutton.

Manager Tariq Merhab, and WME agents Sarah Self and Simon Faber repped the sale to Imagine.

Barrymore, who last directed the Ellen Page-starred “Whip It” currently has the Warner Bros. projects “Heist Society” and “Surrender Dorothy” on her directing slate alongside New Line’s “How to Be Single”. As an actress she also stars in the upcoming Universal pic “Big Miracle” (previously, and significantly better known as “Everybody Loves Whales”).

Barrymore is repped by Peter Levine and Bryan Lourd at CAA.

ABC has canceled its ‘Charlie’s Angels’ reboot.

Production on the Miami-set revamp has been shut down, and according to the Hollywood Reporter, remaining episodes will continue to air until the network makes a decision on what will air in its place.

Despite heavy brand-awareness and Drew Barrymore’s executive producing credit, the show failed to find an audience.

‘Charlie’s Angels’ premiered to a disappointing 2.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and the show has drastically fallen since. Its most recent Thursday night episode garnered a disastrous 1.3 in the 18-49 demo.

‘Charlie’s Angels’ is the fifth show to be canceled this season. ‘Free Agents,’ ‘The Playboy Club,’ ‘H8R’ and ‘How to Be a Gentleman’ have all gotten the axe.

Alaskans involved in the production of the big-budget studio film “Everybody Loves Whales” — or maybe just those startled to see Drew Barrymore in an Anchorage coffee shop — shouldn’t look for a movie under that title to see their name in the credits. The movie, which stars Barrymore and John Krasinski and revolves around the real-life story of the rescue of three gray whales trapped by sea ice in the Arctic Ocean, has been retitled “Big Miracle,” according to a post from the Alaska Film Office’s Facebook page. The film will likely see some popularity in the 49th State after the cause celebre surrounding the project’s $30 million budget and use of Alaska locales. The movie is slated to release on Feb. 3, 2012, so any Alaskans wondering if they’re house shows up in the background can check it out then.
